The Nike Hyper Elite Dominance Michigan State uniform is inspired by aesthetics prevalent on the jersey worn during the 1979 season. The jersey features a rounded neckline with bonded taping along with the 1979 script “State” graphics. The bronze color uniform takes inspiration from ancient Spartan battle helmets. The shorts feature two key details from the 1979 short: an oversized Spartan logo and matching taping.
Coached by Jud Heathcote and led by Johnson, the 1979 Michigan State Spartans won 75-64 in the first tournament in which all teams were seeded by the NCAA Division 1 Men’s Basketball Committee.
Michigan State is one of the most storied basketball teams in the country. Their accolades include two NCAA Championships (1979, 2000), 8 Final Fours (57, 79, 99, 00, 01, 05, 09, 10) and 13 Big Ten Championships. It’s that magical 1979 Championship team and uniform that Nike will pay tribute to when Michigan State squares off against Georgetown on Feb. 1 at Madison Square Garden.
